Reading the docs and mastering your domain is no longer optional. It is how you understand what AI is actually proposing, not just what it outputs. The reality is you cannot learn everything in extreme depth, but without fundamentals, you cannot even judge whether the solution makes sense.

There is a reason AI-generated code is often filled with comments. It is compensating for a gap in understanding. Ask AI to build a car and it might casually hand you a rocket engine. Looks impressive. Good luck figuring out what you are holding, how it works, or why it breaks.

Clarity is the real skill. You need to know what is happening, and more importantly, what is wrong when things go wrong. With today’s AI-driven workflows, you barely see the code. At best, you get a technical summary of changes and hope you remember it later. And that only works if the summary is actually detailed, not a shallow “here’s what I did” list.

The way to ride this wave is not to outsource thinking. It is to get closer to the roots. First principles. Strong domain knowledge. Over the years, reading great engineers made one thing obvious: curiosity compounds. And in the age of AI, it might be the most valuable asset you can build.
